Our science topic for this term is Sound. We have been using rulers and tuning forks to investigate how the length of an object affects the pitch of the sound made.
We then looked at using marshmallows and skewers to create a sound wave machine. By tapping on one end we watched the sound wave travel along the rest of the skewers and return – like an echo.
Then we investigated whether sound could travel through gases (air), liquids (water) and solids (furniture). In conclusion, we discovered that sound can travel through all three mediums. However, it was most effective in solids as the particles in a solid are close together resulting in the particles vibrating against each other more easily.
