 Sulgrave Manor

Towards the end of our Tudor topic, we visited Sulgrave Manor to experience what life was like for the rich and poor during Tudor times.

As you can see from the pictures, the children were dressed in traditional clothing for boys and girls – some choose to experience dress as the opposite gender.

The day started with a tour of the house which was built by Lawrence Washington, the 5-ties great grandfather of George Washington. He had made his money in the wool industry and wanted to build a house to show off is wealth. The children were amazed at the amount of words we use today that originated in Tudor times such as Board Games and cupboards.

During the rest of the day, the children learnt about life in Tudor schools – if you could afford it. They practised their writing and learnt about a horn book. Also, they tried their hand at Tudor servant jobs with some cleaning and mock bread making. The afternoon was full of Tudor games and pastimes that all of the children enjoyed and some really mastered.
