Reception has been buzzing with excitement as we launched our new story focus, “Take a Walk, Little Bear.” The adventure began with the discovery of mysterious footprints when the children arrived in the morning! Eager to solve the mystery, they compared their own footprints, trying to uncover who might have left them. The excitement grew when a special video message arrived from Mummy Bear, asking for our help to find Baby Bear.
The children sprang into action, creating “missing posters” and displaying them around the school, hoping to spot Baby Bear. This was a brilliant opportunity to practise descriptive language, as they carefully chose words to describe Baby Bear’s appearance. Inspired by the mystery, they also decided to build bear traps to help with the search!
The quest continued with a bear hunt around the school grounds, where the children searched for clues, demonstrating their keen observation skills and determination. Their hard work paid off—when we returned to the classroom, we found even more surprises. Larger footprints had appeared, along with a thank-you note from Mummy Bear, a jar of honey, some bread, and a brand-new teddy bear. The children enjoyed honey on toast, using their fantastic descriptive language to explore its texture, taste, and appearance. It was a delicious way to bring our learning to life!
Meanwhile, in Maths, the children have been strengthening their number sense. They have been practising recognising numbers 6 and 7 and developing their understanding of “1 more” and “1 less.” Using a numbered ruler, they confidently followed instructions to find numbers that were 1 more than 7, demonstrating their reasoning and problem-solving skills. They also explored how numbers can be split into different parts while still representing the same total—great teamwork all around!
In PSHE, the children learned about Valentine’s Day and discussed different ways to show kindness and love. This inspired the children to independently organise their own wedding role-play, working together to take on different roles and create their own scenarios.
What an incredible term of curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork!
