Term 5 spelling shed lists 27to 31.doc

I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable Easter break. Welcome to a sparkling new term. Although this is a shorter term, it will be action packed.

Our new science topic, ‘Living things and their habitats’ will include dissecting flowers, growing plants and cuttings and collecting minibeasts from the Forest School, classifying them and researching their life cycles. How lucky we are to have this wonderful resource.

Our new geography topic is biomes and we will be learning about the ice, grassland, taiga, savannah and freshwater biomes. We will be learning about their location and climate and about the clever adaptations of the plants and anilmals that thrive in these places. This topic will also include an awareness of conservation and the need to look after our precious planet.

In literacy lessons, we will be writing portal stories and will be focussing on setting descriptions, including the writing of  rich setting descriptions.

Daily maths lessons will continue with Mr Evans , in addition to a weekly arithmetic lesson. We will be re-capping on column addition and subtraction, short division, long and short multiplication, place value including decimals, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and finding fractions of amounts. We will be tackling questions of increasing complexity and working on our accuracy.

In our music lessons we will continue to learn the rap ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ and will move on from class composition to individual and peer composition. The year five members of our ‘Big Sing’ choir will also be busy preparing for this exciting concert at the Derngate theatre.

We are lucky with our PE lessons this term as we have visiting cricket coaches and tennis coaches who will be working with us each week, leading to our participation in mini tournaments later in the year. Tennis lessons will be on Thursday and Cricket lessons will be on Friday. Please can PE kit be in school on these days. PE kit can be worn to school on those days if wished, but no football strips or hoodies are to be worn in class. Please stick to uniform PE and send in a school jumper or cardigan to be worn over the top for formality in assemblies. Warm hoodie style PE tops can be worn in the PE lessons if needed.

Spelling and homework routines will continue to be the same: spelling test on Friday. Homework handed in on Friday. No homework needs to be handed in this Friday. We will begin next week. There is a spelling test this Friday as we are learning the words in class every day.

As ever, I would like to thank you all for your continued support with reading at home. Our year five total word count is looking phenominal and we are on track to have even more word millionaires before the end of the year.

I have been busy organising two school trips for year five to enjoy before the end of the year – details to follow shortly. There is lots to look forward to.

Wishing everyone a happy and successful term.
